THE LOCATION

PORCIANO DI LAMPORECCHIO


The village of Porciano belongs to the municipality of Lamporecchio, in the province of Pistoia. The village lies approximately 4 km from the town of Lamporecchio.

The village is of medieval origin and its principal features are the remains of two square defensive towers and the Church of St Giorgio, all of which are believed to date back to around the year 1200 or earlier. The church contains several interesting paintings, including a Madonna and Child attributed to the artist Manasa Gerini and thought to date from1520.

LAMPORECCHIO


The old town of Lamporecchio has a population of approximately 7000 and contains all the usual facilities to support it, with a variety of shops, banks, cafes, bars, restaurants and hotels. There is a certain amount of industry, in addition to the surrounding agriculture and the town contains a number of fine buildings.

There is a music festival at the end of May, continuing throughout June, whilst the annual town festival, fair and market is held on the first Tuesday in August.

VINCI


Vinci is famous the world over as the birthplace (15 April 1452) of Leonardo da Vinci and his home until the mid 1460s, when the family moved to Florence. The Museo Leonardiano (Leonardo Museum) and the Leonardo Library together provide a detailed insight into the many and varied accomplishments of this remarkable genius.

Dating back to the Middle Ages, Vinci has a castle in its centre and the church where Leonardo was, allegedly, baptised. Half a million visitors visit the town each year and there is a good variety of shops, commercial facilities, bars and restaurants.
